ONLY GOT A MINUTE?
If you are about to visit Finland, it is well worth learning a few phrases on Finnish. Finns really do appreciate a visitor making an effort to speak a little Finnish. Finnish is not as difficult as people make it out to be. Most people are familiar with some Finnish words without necessarily being aware of it. You can't go anywhere without bumping into Nokia, mobile technology giant named after a small Finnish town. Nokia's internet services are called ovi door.
At your gym you have probably had a sauna, Finland's most famous export.
You are most likely to have used a lift made by Kone, Finnish for a machine.
Hei! means hello. Everything is pronounced as it is written - one letter, one sound.
Kippis cheers launches a beer olut or a shot of Finlandia votka. If you can't understand your drinking companions, say Anteeksi, en ymmärrä Sorry, I don't understand.
When offered something, say kiitos thank you and you will hear ole hyvä you are welcome.
Finns are very hospitable, you will be asked lisää? more, kiitos will get you more and if you have had enough, ei kiitos no thanks might help, but your hosts will try and persuade you to have some more anyway.
Tervetuloa welcome will greet you on arrival.
If you want to get off to a gentle start, ask Puhutteko englantia? Do you speak English?
You could always approach joulupukki Santa Claus, Finland's most global citizen by email and ask for help apua!
Ask a friend to send you a few phrases by text message tekstiviesti, another brilliant Finnish invention.
And if you are a Formula 1 fan, just getting your tongue around the names of Mika Häkkinen, Heikki Kovalainen and Kimi Räikkönen will make your Finnish pronunciation perfect and will give you something to talk about with the sports-mad Finns.
Ovi on auki... the door is open..
La seconda invece si intitola come questo post:
ONLY GOT FIVE MINUTES?
Don't believe people if they tell you that all Finnish words are difficult.
Your first visit as a turisti tourist maybe to Helsinki, where you can get round the town by taksi taxi, auto car, bussi bus or metro the underground or mopo a moped.
You might go to baari a bar for drinkki a drink. You will stay at hotelli a hotel or hostelli a hostel.
You might go to ooppera an opera, museo a museum or teatteri the theatre.
You might watch sports urheilu (OK that's a bit more difficult), or listen to pop-konsertti a pop concert with a famous bändi band. Musiikki music is good in Finland. From Sibelius to Darude, from sinfonia to disko.
Hevi rock is what Loordi won eurovision laulukilpailu the Eurovision song contest with.
Not all loanwords come from English, but most of the new ones do.
We may be good at teknologia, but we like our language and mobile phone is called kännykkä, a word derived from an old Finnish word for the palm of the hand and a computer is tietokone, literally a knowledge machine, a bit like Sampo the wonder machine of the mythical people of Kalevala.
Bisnes is globaali, Suomi Finland is moderni and learning Finnish is a challenge - your grey cells will thank you for. Tsemppiä! Good luck!
XoXo
